Glossary

This is an attempt to create a glossary of frequently used library/chartership related terms, both for my own reference and for the use of others who might be seeking definitions. Some of the definitions will be my own, some are from other people. Please see the bibliography for full references. 

Blog

A website created in journal style, which displays the most recent items first(Peter Godwin).
See e.g. Blogger, WordPress, livejournal 

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary)

Enables internet content from frequently updated sites like blogs to be specified in XML in a file called an RSS feed to be delivered to your chosen web feed reader or aggregator (Peter Godwin).

Social bookmarking

Social bookmarking sites are where individuals collect their ‘favourites’ on a website, as opposed to only listing them on their own computer. In this way, they can be viewed from any computer and can also be shared with others.

Social networking

A type of internet application which helps to connect friends or people with similar interests (Peter Godwin).
E.g. MySpace

Web 2.0

…a collection of good ideas which use the web as a platform, bundled together in a box called Web 2.0 (Peter Godwin).

Wiki

A website for collaborative authoring which allows visitors to add, remove and edit some available text, sometimes without the need for registration. (Peter Godwin).
E.g. Wikipedia, Teacher Librarian Wiki
